Job Summary

The British Council is the UKs international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities. We create friendly knowledge and understanding between the people of the UK and other countries. We do this by making a positive contribution to the UK and the countries we work with changing lives by creating opportunities, building connections and engendering trust.

Details of Position

We work with over 100 countries across the world in the fields of arts and culture, English language, education and civil society. Each year we reach over 20 million people face-to-face and more than 500 million people online, via broadcasts and publications. Founded in 1934, we are a UK charity governed by Royal Charter and a UK public body.

Through our English and Exams work we aim to achieve more widespread and better quality teaching and learning of English worldwide and offer access to professional qualifications. Working with policymakers, government ministers, teachers and learners across the world we help millions of people to access English by supporting the teaching and learning of English in public education systems, and through self-access materials and courses.

We teach learners and teachers of English face-to-face in dedicated teaching centres and online through a range of courses. Every year three million people take international exams with help from the British Council, gaining qualifications that can open doors at leading academic institutions and improve employment prospects.

IELTS On-Screen Marking (OSM) is strategically important to the Exams business plan and will transform the way the British Council delivers and manages IELTS. We offer IELTS OSM Writing Examiners the chance to mark the written component on screen remotely from home.

The OSM project began with a soft launch period, called Launch and Learn, during which we worked with a small group of Writing Examiners and a specific number of test centres. OSM has now embarked upon a global roll-out. As a result of this global roll-out, we are now calling for applications and expressions of interest from suitably qualified and experienced individuals based in the UK to take part in a pilot project to train a small number of new IELTS Writing Examiners for ongoing OSM marking work. This is a significant opportunity to become involved in an exciting and innovative approach to marking. Please note that current IELTS Examiners are not able to apply for roles in this pilot.

The British Council work in partnership with Comensura, who manage all our non-permanent workforce (NPW) requirements. Comensura provides the payroll to NPWs through Carbon 60 and if you join the OSM team as an Examiner, you will be hired and paid through Carbon 60. Carbon 60 can employ Examiners on a PAYE basis (including self-employed) or as a Limited Company. Further details can be found in the British Council and Carbon60 link.

The closing date for applications is 25th March 2018. Interviews will take place in London during the week beginning 16th April. Successful applicants will be required to attend training sessions on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th June. Trainees who successfully pass certification will be scheduled to begin marking in late June or early July.

To take advantage of this opportunity please include all the items listed below:

A completed application form, including Attachments A and B;
Supporting documents, including scans of all qualifications (you will have to provide the originals at interview stage).
Please note that incomplete applications will not be considered.

Please note that we require candidates to have the pre-existing right to work in the UK.

The British Council is committed to a policy of equal opportunity and is keen to reflect the diversity of UK society at every level within the organisation. We welcome applications from all sections of the community. In line with the British Council's Child Protection policy, any appointment is contingent on thorough checks. In the UK, and in other countries where appropriate systems exist, these include criminal records checks.

As an IELTS OSM Writing Examiner you should expect the following conditions of work:

Working from home at your registered UK residential address.
Examiners are expected to complete an allocated quota of marking within a shift; the daily rate quoted above is based on a quota of 100 Tasks per full marking day. For an initial period, however, the daily quota will be set at 50 and will be reviewed and increased at the end of each week.

Online support will be provided from 7am to 7pm Monday to Friday. You will, however, be able to start and finish work outside these hours and manage your time in the way that suits you best, taking regular breaks as and when you wish.

OSM Training will be provided by the British Council IELTS OSM team. Support will be provided to OSM Writing Examiners, in line with British Council standards, so we can help you to assess and manage your home-working space, including best practice on Health and Safety.

Required conditions for home-working are listed below:
A dedicated office-style working space that allows secure and uninterrupted working - a private space where your work cannot be accessed or observed by others
A desktop computer with two 17-inch marking screens (15 if laptop), or one large screen (minimum 26). See also Mark Manager PC Technical Specifications link below.
Adobe Reader.
A broadband internet connection with average speed 10mbps.
Adequate heating, ventilation and light to ensure a safe and comfortable working environment.
An appropriate Internet security/anti-virus package.
Access to communication channels including email and telephone.
All OSM Writing Examiners are required to adhere to the IELTS Code of Practice, Confidentiality Undertaking and PSN procedures for OSM Writing Examiners.

Substantial relevant EFL teaching experience to adult students.

Contractual hours: Examiners need to be available for 1.5 3.5 days a week during Monday Thursday (following Saturday tests). Additional work on other days, including after Thursday tests, may be available.
